Overlooked Expenses You May Encounter When Renovating

If you’ve ever done any renovation work, you’ll know that most projects always go over budget no matter how carefully you maintain the job. However, unexpected expenses can derail even the best-laid plans with a prudent contingency fund. Here we will go over some of the more overlooked costs that you may experience when renovating. 

1.     Heaters Or Dehumidifiers  

If you’re plastering your house, you’ll almost certainly need to use a dryer or heater to eliminate extra moisture from the air and aid in the drying process.  

Heaters and dehumidifiers can be hired by the day, so depending on the time of year and the drying pace of the plaster or screed, it can take a few days or weeks and you will also need to consider the cost of electricity. It won’t be much, but it’s something that can be overlooked in the original budget. 

 2.     Moving Out 

One cost of a home renovation that is frequently overlooked is where you will live. If your home is rendered uninhabitable, you must find alternate accommodation. This usually entails spending most of your time in a hotel.  

Even if you don’t need to make other plans, your pets will need to be moved because they will most likely be in the way of the construction. Even when they can sleep at home, you’ll need to find a place to stay during the day, which may entail boarding or paying somebody to pet-sit. 

3.     Permits and Planning Permission 

When doing any remodelling, it’s important that you check if you require planning permission. Failing to obtain permission could mean tearing out all those new cabinets and starting over.  

Owners frequently overlook zoning or property lines when budgeting for home remodelling costs. While you may believe your neighbour’s fence is at the property line, it can be a significant expense to begin construction without checking first.  

4.     Waste Removal 

Unfortunately, most projects generate a large amount of waste, which must be disposed of carefully, which can add up to extra pennies at the end of your project when money is limited.  

Skips aren’t cheap, so if you need to hire more than one, you may overspend. It’s best to think about this during the planning stage and maybe plan for a larger skip than you think you’ll need or arrange for someone to collect the waste at various points throughout the project. 

5.     Deep Clean 

It’s impressive how far dust can travel when heavy renovation or demolition work is somewhere else in the house. Of course, you can close all the internal doors and windows, but you’ll find yourself brushing debris off curtains or bedding in rooms other than where the work is being done.  

If you decide to stay in your property during the renovations, you can keep track of this daily while the project is underway. However, you should budget for deep cleaning so you can return your home to normal after the builders have left at the end of the job.
