Mistakes To Avoid While Buying Running Shoes

Ever since the fitness bug stung the world, there has been a steady rise in the demand for running shoes. So much so that the leading brands are now designing specific shoes for every kind of runner. Do not wonder if you spot a dedicated section of trail running shoes, cross-training shoes, and running sneakers for women and men.

While these shoes intend to make running a more fruitful and fulfilling experience, not having the right shoe can do the opposite. Hence, one should always be prudent and avoid the below-mentioned mistakes while buying running shoes.

Mistake #1: Overlooking Fit

Keeping your biomechanics in mind while shoe shopping is paramount. Having the right fitting shoe that complements your wear pattern (neutral pronation, overpronation, or under pronation), running style, foot shape, and gait will make your running more efficient. Unfortunately, most people ignore this part.

Ill-fitted shoes can make you uncomfortable. They might slide around or squeeze your feet so tightly, making your skin and muscles cry.

Ideally, your shoe should have at least a thumb’s width of space between the front of the shoe and the end of your longest toe. You should be able to extend your toes without touching the front of the shoe. The shoe should snug your heels and midfoot without sliding or slipping.

Make sure you measure your feet before trying on any shoe. Also, try the shoe wearing socks to know how it feels.

Mistake #2: Buying shoes in the morning

If you buy a running shoe early in the morning, it might feel very tight and snuggly. The reason is your feet are smaller in the morning and tend to swell as the day proceeds.

So, if you plan to run only during the break of dawn, which is quite unlikely, buy your shoes in the morning. Otherwise, buy running shoes in the afternoon to get the right fit.

Mistake #3: Not buying shoes specifically designed for running

You can run in any shoe- sneakers, walking shoes, or canvas shoes. But if you are seeking a productive, efficient, and comfortable run, maybe you should look for shoes designed specifically for running.

Gone are the days when one shoe would serve all the purposes. Today, shoes are designed using special technologies and features, exclusive to the kind of activity.

Your running shoe will have every feature that will make your activity fun, safe, and efficient. Hence, buy running shoes for running, walking shoes for walking, and lifestyle shoes for regular wear.

Mistake #4: Going by assumptions

You know your shoe size, but this does not mean you can blindly pick a shoe in that particular size and assume it will fit you properly. Shoe size is not always consistent with brands. If size 7 fits you in one brand, it might feel too tight or loose in other brands or any other style.

Hence, put assuming to rest and try shoes every time before you buy.

Mistake #5: Not willing to spend money

Not wanting to buy very expensive shoes is fine, but buying an extremely inexpensive shoe might be a big mistake. Highly prized shoes testify to the use of advanced technologies and thoughtful design. On the other hand, cheap shoes demonstrate a lack of quality and comfort.

Instead of looking for cheap shoes, look for affordable shoes with good features. The markets are full of running shoes suiting every budget.

The bottom line

With so many options in hand, finding the right running shoe is no problem.  Keep an eye on these mistakes, and you will get the best running partner.
