Keeping Your Kids Safe Without Wrapping Them Up In Cotton Wool

If there’s something that many parents find difficult, it’s making sure their kids stay safe without wrapping them up in cotton wool. It’s tempting to try to keep your kids close forever, but this could eventually drive them away. If it doesn’t, it could leave them with very little common sense and they may feel they need you to hold their hand throughout their lives, unable to make their own decisions or have confidence in themselves. Finding the balance is key. Here are a few ways you can keep your kids safe without wrapping them up in cotton wool:

1. Allow Them Some Independence

Allowing your kids some independence is important. It can depend on their age and ability, of course, but this is your prerogative. For example, could they walk to school alone? Can you allow them to go out with their friends for a few hours after school?

2. Encourage Them To Make Their Own Decisions

Kids often come to adults when they don’t know what decision to make. Allowing your kids to make decisions for themselves encourages them to think for themselves. They have somebody telling them what to do all day at school, so making them make their own decisions at home is important. If they are bored, encourage them to find something to do. Encourage them to dress themselves. You don’t need to provide all of the solutions for them.

3. Don’t Force Your Own Fears And Limitations Onto Them

Most parents don’t realize that they force their own fears and limitations onto their kids, and this can affect them in the long run. Let them climb a tree, let them get dirty, let them have snowball fights. Stop panicking about every little thing.

4. Keep Your Home Safe and Healthy

Provide a place they can thrive and grow at home by keeping it safe and healthy. Ensure there are no pests to worry about by looking at a reliable raccoon removal company if you need to. You want your kids to be independent but you don’t want them to have to fight off a team of hungry racoons.

4. Praise Them The Right Way

If you tell your kids they are natural at everything they do, they will be unprepared for a world where they don’t find things so effortless and easy. Praise them the right way, using the right language. Encourage hard work and putting in the effort.

5. Find An Active Hobby For Them

An active hobby for your kids could be:

  • Martial arts
  • Dance
  • Football

This type of thing will help them to build confidence, as well as relationships with peers. It also gives them the opportunity to become a leader later on in life.

6. Don’t Encourage Them To Brush Their Feelings Under The Rug

Having kids with emotions doesn’t mean you’re mollycoddling them. Encouraging them to feel and accept their emotions before moving through them is an important skill that will help them in adulthood. If you try to stop them from feeling any negative feelings at all, by perhaps giving them food, buying them gifts, or trying to fix things for them, they will not only struggle with feelings as adults, they will likely make other people responsible for their happiness.
