How to Wash a Pillow and Make it Look New

1. Check the label

Before washing the pillow make sure what type of pillow you are using, check the instructions tag, and read the washing guidelines to learn about recommended washing methods.

Most companies give detailed instructions on how to take care of each type while washing it. Every type of pillow needs to be handled differently while washing; some can only be dry cleaned, some can be washed in a machine, some can only be hand washed whereas some can be washed in the machine but cannot be dried in the dryer. For example, down and feather pillows can be washed in a machine but washing your memory foam pillows in a machine is a terrible idea.

Moreover, if your pillow has no such detailed instructions mentioned on the tag or if you have removed it mistakenly, the best option is to take no risk and wash it by hand to prevent it from getting damaged.

2. Gather all the necessary material

To clean your pillow and get rid of yellow stains you will need items like mild detergent or liquid soap, water at the temperature mentioned on the instructions and dryer balls, or tennis balls. You can also go for a detergent with antibacterial properties as it will be more advantageous. But keep in mind to never go for harsh detergents which have bleaching properties. Moreover, if the yellow stains are of great intensity you can use baking soda as well. Gather all these materials before getting started.

3. Pull out all the coverings and air it out

Before washing your pillow you need to remove all the pillow linings and coverings in order to get it cleaned properly. After removing all the coverings, you need to make your pillow get good sunshine as it is best for cleaning and killing bacteria. But keep in mind not all the pillow types need sunshine so, make sure what type of pillow you are using before airing it out.

4. Use a washing machine

Not all the pillows can be washed in a washing machine but microfiber pillows and polyester pillows are suitable for washing machines. You can use warm water and a tablespoon or two of mild detergent or liquid soap to get rid of all those yellow stains. Washing pillows in a machine is quite easy but all you need to keep in mind is that pillows should be washed separately from other laundry items.

5. Hand wash your pillow if needed

Pillows like memory foam pillows need to be hand washed. You can clean it by soaking it in warm water with a small amount of mild soap or liquid detergent with no harsh bleaching agents for a few minutes. If the stains are hard to remove you can use baking soda as well for removing them. Use cold water to remove the excess amount of detergent remaining in the pillow but keep in mind to not spin your pillow as it might lose its shape.

6. Dry your pillows

Make sure that you dry out your pillows before using them again. Dryer balls or tennis balls can also be used for drying out pillows. Always read the instructions mentioned on the tag before drying out your pillow. Some can be dried on high heat while some require moderate heat levels. Moreover, you can also dry them in the sun.

7. Fluff the pillows

Remember to always fluff the pillows after washing them and taking them out of the dryer. Hit them slightly with your fists on the ends of the pillow to keep them stuffed and fluffy. Make it a daily routine to fluff them before going to bed and waking up in the morning.

As simple as these tasks are, they are quite effective and will keep your pillows looking brand new and stuffed. Do try them and you’ll be thanking us later.
