How to Stay House Proud When You Have a Dog 

Whether you’re a seasoned dog owner or are considering getting your first family pooch, you may be worried about how you can keep your home looking (and smelling) its best with a doggy resident. While it’s true that owning a dog will add to your to-do list and is a big commitment both financially and in terms of time, there are some steps you can take to minimise the mess, fur and food they bring with them. Here are some great tips to help you keep on top of doggy debris as much as possible and maintain a clean and tidy family home.  

Get A Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Even dogs that don’t shed much will be dropping some hair and debris, which becomes attached to their fur, and their ‘dander’ (skin flakes and saliva) can be a problem for people with allergies. This is why it’s important to vacuum more regularly with a dog in the home. To give yourself a break, consider investing in a robot or automated vacuum cleaner, which will also run to a schedule at night or when you’re not home. If you find your dog is shedding quite a bit more than you expect, you can look into other ways to stop excessive shedding. 

Add A Lint Roller and Stain Remover to Your Cleaning Kit 

A lint roller is essential for picking up hair and dander from soft furnishings like lampshades, sofas and pillows. In addition, a pet stain remover will be really helpful to have on standby for those accidents, particularly if you have a puppy or when the dog has a stomach upset. A stain remover will not only get rid of the visible marks if you get on it quickly but also the bacteria and odours. 

Protect Your Dog and Home from Pests 

Flea infestation is not only uncomfortable for your dog, but it can also get out of control in your home very quickly. Wipe Those Paws 

Simply placing a doormat inside and outside the door will catch a lot of the debris and dirt dogs have picked up on their walks, as will an absorbent and washable rug in your entranceway. In addition, remember that dog nails can cause a lot of damage to wooden floors, soft furnishings and leather, so trim dog nails regularly.

Dogs tend to prefer certain spots in the house for naps, so why not try these puppy pads and cover them over with washable sheets or a blanket which will catch their hairs and protect against staining and odours.

Place A Tray Under Food and Water Bowls 

Dogs can be messy eaters, and often the area around their food bowls can become sticky and wet. Try placing a tray under their bowls to catch most of the dropped food, crumbs and dribbled water, as it will be much easier to clean than the floor itself.
