How to Run Your Business While Dealing with Office Renovations

One of the top mistakes that business owners make is shutting down their businesses during renovations. There is an alarming amount of businesses that do this. Sure, it technically depends on what your business is, such as a restaurant can’t exactly function with major renovations, and the same goes for something like a logistics warehouse. But then there are other businesses that can still function with renovations, like those that are office-oriented.  

This could work like consulting, marketing, software, or anything that technically doesn’t need to have customers/ clients coming to the business. So, with that said, it is almost always possible to run a business while renovations are going on around the office. Maybe not always (such as electricity or water needs to be off), but for the most part, it’s possible. So, here’s how you can run your business while dealing with office renovations.

Talk to Your Employees

Before you look into an office fit out, it’s best to go ahead and talk to your employees first and see how they feel. Some folks just cannot focus is there are too damn distractions, whether it be something like hammering, contractors chatting, or even just the changes in the office space. Your employees should be a priority when it comes to office renovations. You want to make sure that they feel comfortable and happy while the renovations are taking place. This will help you to keep productivity up and ensure that they continue to work efficiently. Maybe during this period, if some people cannot operate in a renovating office (especially those who are neurodivergent), then it’s best to talk to them about what would work best, such as working from home.

Set Up a Temporary Office

Sometimes, but not always, a business is able to temporarily rent out another space, especially if it’s something like a major building (like a skyscraper). Usually, properties like this tend to be flexible in case of renovations. With that said, sometimes, the best thing you can do is set this up. Chances are you and your team might not be able to work at the current office due to safety hazards, or maybe all of the noise is too distracting.  You could even consider something like WeWork or similar spaces while waiting for your business to finish up.

You Need a Backup Plan

Before you even begin these renovations, you need to make sure you have a backup plan. Not just where everyone will work and operate, but what will happen is renovations go past the expected date (which is super common). All of this has to be put into consideration.

Go Remote

Does your business 100% need to have everyone together? Does your business absolutely need to have everyone in the same space? While yes, some businesses do, but not every business. If your business is able to fully operate without anyone leaving their home, then why make it challenging? Sometimes going fully remote is for the best, you don’t need to worry about rent for a temp space, and everyone is still able to talk on platforms like Zoom or Slack.
