How to Keep Your Home Allergy-Free All Year Long

Allergies can ruin even the best of days, and there is no need for your home to be a hub for allergens throughout the year. Here are a few of the best tips to remove allergens, and keep them out of your house.

Air Purifier

Firstly, an air purifier is one of the best things you can purchase, especially if you are allergic to things like pollen and pet dander. Air purifiers by Alen process the air, remove the allergens, and put fresh, clean air back into your home.

While you will need to clean and change the filters regularly, an air purifier allows you to keep your windows and doors closed during peak allergy times.

Close Windows & Doors

Speaking of windows and doors, this is the easiest thing you can do to limit allergens getting into your home. Considering many travel in the air, shutting the windows and doors cuts down on them dramatically.

If you live somewhere that gets very hot, investing in air conditioning or a fan is the best idea, and once again, an air purifier will ensure you have a constant source of fresh air.

Weatherstripping

If you live in an older house or your windows and doors haven’t been perfectly installed, drafts will be a common issue. Even the smallest draft will bring allergens into the home, and therefore, weatherstripping your home ensures your windows and doors are properly sealed.

This can be yourself, and will only take an hour or two to do. If you are unsure if there is a draft, place a small amount of flour or a feather by the window or door, and if it blows around, you need to seal that door or window.

Clean Regularly

Never underestimate how much of a difference cleaning can make when it comes to removing allergens, especially dust and pollen. This means a weekly clean should be on the cards to keep your home as allergen-free as possible.

Additionally, you should always dust, and when you do, dust from top to bottom and then vacuum to ensure you don’t put the dust and pollen in the air, and stop it from falling onto surfaces you have already cleaned. It may we worth searching for a local house cleaning to really deep-clean your home and help reduce allergens.

Deep Clean Carpeting

If you have carpets, make the extra effort to give them a deep clean. Carpets can hold a lot of dust, pollen, pet hair, etc, and therefore, can often be the cause of allergy outbreaks if you have done everything else on this list.

Don’t Forget the Pets

As much as we love our pets, they can bring a lot of allergens into your home, and therefore, you need to make sure you give them a bath and clean regularly, especially if they are out and about often.

Secondly, you should clean their beds, blankets, and toys often, as those will be things covered in allergens that can cause outbreaks.

Change Bedding Regularly

Considering you spend so much time in your bed, having it covered with allergens is a recipe for disaster. Because of this, you need to change your bedding regularly and change it if there is a pollen outbreak.

Dust mites and bed bugs can also be a problem, but simply exposing your mattress to the sun is the easiest way to deal with them. Remove all your bedding, open your curtains, and let your mattress bake in the sun for a few hours to prevent bed bugs.

Cover Bed When Going Away

If you are going away for an extended period, it is always best to put fresh bedding on, and then cover your bed with a sheet. This will prevent dust from settling on it, as a lot of this dust is often removed by us just using and moving our blankets and pillows.

Clean Your Curtains

Your curtains can also be a problem when it comes to allergies, especially considering they are often the barrier between your windows and the rest of your home. This means they can quickly get covered in allergens, and you wouldn’t even notice.

While sometimes annoying, it is always best to take your curtains down once a month or once every two months and give them a proper clean.

Clear & Clean Clutter

Clutter can be another culprit when it comes to hiding allergens, simply because it, and the space around the clutter, doesn’t often get cleaned properly. Therefore, the best idea is to clear up all your clutter and be sure to clean the area it was covering.

Even if you don’t have clutter, small tables, mats, baskets, and everything else you may have on the floor could be hiding a lot of dust and debris underneath it.

Dehumidify

Finally, mold is another common problem and one that can cause breathing problems and allergy attacks. Mold is also very common in countries that are cold and wet for most of the year, such as the UK, Northern United States, etc.

Mold can be caused by steam from showering or tumble drying, but you can combat this with a dehumidifier. These nifty appliances remove all the excess moisture in your home, allowing you to dry it out without it needing to be warm or forcing you to open windows and doors.
