How To Expand Your General Knowledge

Having good general knowledge is something that can help in many surprising ways. You never know when a random piece of information that you’ve picked up at some point in your life might actually be the answer you’re looking for either literally in a quiz or exam or laterally when you’re trying to work out the solution to a challenging problem. It may seem as though some people just inherently have good general knowledge, but although some people are better at retaining information than others, that doesn’t mean that others can’t learn the same information. There are a number of different ways to expand your general knowledge.

Read

The very best way to improve your general knowledge is to read, and read a lot. Constant reading means that you’ll pick up all sorts of information, and you may not even realize you have done so until you need to recall it. It doesn’t have to be a novel, either. If you prefer magazines or non-fiction books, they will be just as good. You won’t remember everything, but some of the information you read will certainly be picked up for future use. If your budget is limited, visit a library and get some reading material for free, and if it’s time you need, then switch TV for reading instead.

Writing

When you write a story, you need to make sure that it is accurate. Even if it is a work of fiction and completely wild, you still need to adhere to certain truths. If you’re not sure about something, such as the different types of dog breeds, or what the moon is made of, or how many countries there are in the world, then you’ll need to look it up and find out the facts and that means you’re learning new things. They say that reading helps you understand new facts, but writing them down in some memorable context helps it stick.

Being With Friends

Taking time out to spend with your friends is good for you in a number of different ways, including your health and, of course, your general knowledge. If there is a large group of people who enjoy spending time together, then it is easy for everyone’s knowledge to be pooled together so that you will learn things you didn’t know from them, and they will do the same with you. This works well because informal conversations are easier to recall than more formal ones, so those little nuggets of information you will have come across will come to mind more easily when you need them.

Conferences

Of course, if you need to attend conferences or seminars as part of your work, you will also be able to discover a lot of information there, although bear in mind that this might be more specific to what you do rather than in the form of general knowledge.

The Internet

We all tend to spend a lot of time on the internet. We might be scrolling through our social media feeds, searching for something, and then getting distracted and learning about something else instead, or researching a paper, book, or any other kind of activity. Although it’s best not to spend a lot of time online (there are lots of other things to do), the time we do spend is often actually teaching us more about our general knowledge than we might ever consider.

Training Courses

If you want to learn something specific, finding a great training course that will give you that information is an excellent idea. You could start by learning Excel courses with STL, for example, since knowing how to use Excel is a highly underestimated but valuable skill. Once you’ve completed that course, you might move on to something else, such as learning how to interpret data or even how to become more assertive. Because training schools like this offer so much choice, once you’ve found one you like, you can work your way through as many courses as you like, picking up a lot of general (and more specialized) knowledge along the way.

Keep Up With The News

The importance of keeping up with current events and the world around you cannot be overstated. In order to learn and retain information on a wide range of subjects, you need to stay on top of the most recent developments in each field.

Keeping up with the news is as easy as scheduling a time each day to do it. Whether you watch the news on television, read a newspaper, or just skim Twitter to see what’s trending, how you get your news is totally up to you. It’s a good idea to subscribe to a daily newspaper if you want to make sure you’re up to date on current events. You can either have it sent to your door or subscribe to the e-version of the publication you like best.
