How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring for Your Partner

If you’re going to propose marriage, then you might put a great deal of thought into the engagement ring. In modern Western culture, the ring is the focal point of the engagement. It’ll be the thing that your partner’s attention is focused on as she (or, increasingly, he, since engagement rings for men are becoming increasingly popular) ponders the question you’re asking. 

The right ring should reflect your personal tastes and preferences, and those of your significant other. It might also have some symbolic resonance that makes it special for both of you. There are also general style rules that everyone might consider.  

Understand Your Partner’s Style and Preferences 

Foremost in your mind as you make this decision, however, should be your partner’s preferences. You can easily get a sense of this by looking at the jewelry they already wear, and by asking the right questions in a subtle way. Don’t be too direct, since this might risk the surprise.  

When you’re considering your options, you might think about the gemstone itself. Diamonds are considered a default, but if your partner is especially fond of, say, black, then you might look for an onyx instead. The metal you choose, and the detailing of the ring, might make a difference, too. 

Educate Yourself on the Four ’C’ s 

Diamonds are judged by four separate criteria. These are cut, color, clarity, and carat. The cut of a diamond determines its shape. The color and clarity define how it catches the light, and how it looks. Finally, carat is a measure of weight. 

Often, a small, clear diamond will sparkle more convincingly than a large, dull one. What matters is that you balance these qualities well, and that you get the best possible diamond (or other gemstone) for your money. 

Choose the Right Setting and Metal 

The term ‘setting’ refers to the structures that hold the stones in place, and the arrangement of the stones themselves. Solitaire, halo, and three-stone designs are all popular. If you want to create a particular effect, however, you might choose something more exotic. Think not just about the ring, but about the way it will look in context. If your partner’s favorite wristwatch is sure to clash with the ring, it might be time to reconsider. 

Consider Ethical and Practical Aspects 

It’s worth thinking about how you’re going to source the diamond. Many of the countries where diamonds are mined don’t protect workers in the same way that others do. This can mean that the investment in a diamond might be used to support and justify practices that are less than ethical. Preferring reputable, ethical names with transparent supply chains is therefore appropriate. Lab-grown diamonds are another option.
