How to Care for your Hair Extensions this Summer

We all know the damage that the sun can do to our skin, but some of us forget that it can damage your hair too. If you’ve just got some new tape in hair extensions fitted that you want to keep in for the summer, you’ll need to look after these if you’re going on holiday. Hair extensions don’t receive natural oils and nutrients from your body like your natural hair does, so you’ll need to take extra care to ensure that they don’t get dry and damaged.
Be Careful When Swimming
There’s nothing better than relaxing in the pool when you’re on holiday. However, swimming pools contain chlorine which can be damaging to your hair extensions. If you get your extensions in chlorine this can cause them to dry out and suffer color loss due to bleaching.
If you’re going in the pool, try to keep your hair out of the water or wear a swimming cap if you’re swimming. If you have clip in extensions you should take these out and you can easily attach them afterwards. If you really can’t avoid getting chlorine on your extensions then you should wash them immediately after coming out of the water to rinse the chlorine off.
Wear a Hat
If you expose your hair to the sun it can cause your hair to suffer dryness and fading. This is particularly relevant if you have red hair, where breakages can occur. Fortunately, hats are an amazing fashion accessory so you can look super stylish as well as keeping your hair protected from the sun. Floppy straw hats are the best choice to go for, they’re in fashion, look amazing and offer you full head protection.
Use Hair Protection Spray
You can buy specialist hair protection spray to help block out the suns UV rays from damaging your hair in the same way that sun cream stops the sun from damaging your skin.
Permanent hair extensions such as micro loop or pre bonded are more expensive to apply and should last a few months once they’ve been fitted at your salon. The last thing you want to your hair extensions to dry out and break due to heat exposure and force you to get some more fitted after just a couple of weeks. Protective spray will add a fine coating to your hair to help block out the sun and make your extensions last longer.
Use Moisture Rich Conditioner
Hair extensions can’t receive moisture from your body like your natural hair, so a moisturising agent needs to be applied manually. The best way of doing this is by applying conditioner to your hair when you wash it. This will help to nourish the hair again and recover from dryness. If you only wash your hair with shampoo it will cause your hair extensions to become too dry and could lead to further damage.
Hair extensions look great in the summer and you don’t have to be scared of using them. Hair weaves are one of the most popular styles at the moment, which you can buy online here.
