Five top tips for hosting a Euros party in your garden

The European Championships are almost upon us and people up and down the country are preparing to celebrate and, quite possibly commiserate, as both England and Scotland look to go all the way.  

For many of us, with the summer months arriving, we’ll look to throw parties, ideally in the back garden, for friends and family to really enjoy the occasion.  

So, with just a few weeks to go, if you’re looking to throw a Euros party in your garden, here are five top tips to help you do just that… 

Get Your Patio Ready 

Of course, the patio is going to be the place where most of the action happens, so getting this in shape is a must. A good patio is so important for such a party as there will be heavy footfall across the tournament, with people coming and going, jumping up and down, as well as the odd tear dropping onto it. 

Patios made from limestone tiles, porcelain, natural stone or even hard composite decking can be good for this type of party as they’re hardwearing and look great. To get them into shape, first make sure they’re clean, sweeping away any debris, dirt and grime, while you also need to ensure your furniture is in good shape too. 

Give that a good wipe down, and ensure there are enough comfortable places to sit. You can then start thinking about decoration. Make sure it’s well lit for any evening games, with the likes of string and festoon lights all adding to the occasion.  

Set Up a Viewing Area 

The focal point of your party will undoubtedly be the screen where everyone gathers to watch the matches. Ensure your viewing area is optimally arranged so that everyone has a clear view. A large outdoor TV or projector screen is ideal. If you’re using a projector, ensure it’s positioned in a shaded area or invest in a projector screen that’s designed to reduce glare. 

Arrange your seating in a semi-circle or stadium style to replicate the feel of a real football match. If your garden is spacious, consider adding a few picnic blankets or lawn chairs for extra seating options. Don’t forget to test your equipment ahead of time to avoid any technical glitches on the day. 

Create a Snack Station 

No football party is complete without snacks. Set up a dedicated snack station with a variety of easy-to-eat finger foods. Think along the lines of crisps, popcorn, and nuts, as well as more substantial options like mini sandwiches, sausage rolls, and pizza slices. To keep things simple, use disposable plates and napkins. 

Consider setting up a drinks station as well. A cooler filled with ice and a variety of beverages, including soft drinks, beer, and perhaps a few bottles of wine, will keep everyone hydrated. If you’re feeling particularly festive, you could even create a signature cocktail in honour of your favourite team. 

Decorate with Football Fever 

To really get everyone in the spirit, decorate your garden with football-themed decorations. Hang up team flags or scarves, and set out football-themed tablecloths and plates. Balloons in your team’s colours can add a festive touch. If you’re feeling crafty, you could even make some DIY decorations, such as football-themed bunting or a mini goalpost for a fun photo backdrop.  

Encourage your guests to dress in their team’s colours or football kits to add to the excitement. You could even offer small prizes for the best-dressed fan or the most spirited supporter. 

Plan for All Weather 

British weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to have a backup plan. If the forecast looks uncertain, consider setting up a gazebo or marquee to provide shelter from rain or excessive sun. This will ensure that your party can continue regardless of the weather. 

Provide some cosy blankets for your guests in case it gets chilly in the evening. If you have outdoor heaters or a fire pit, these can be great additions to keep everyone warm and comfortable.
