Finding the Right Home to Match Disability Needs

Living with a disability is something that many people do. If you or someone in your family is disabled, you can face a lot of challenges. Even when a disabled person is happy with who they are, external challenges are hard to ignore. One of the biggest challenges that some can face is the search for housing. When you need to live somewhere that’s appropriate for various physical needs, finding the right place really isn’t easy. There isn’t a lot of appropriate accommodation that already has the necessary features in place. So what options do you have for finding the right home?

Adapt Your Existing Home

If your current home no longer feels suitable for you due to a change in circumstances, you might be thinking about moving out. However, instead of doing this, you might want to consider whether it’s possible to adapt your current home to your needs. This is obviously a lot easier to do if you own your home. You can make the changes that are necessary without needing permission from anyone else. However, it could be possible to make some alterations with permission from your landlord, especially if you’re a long-term tenant. It might also help if you make changes that can easily be reversed.

Find Specialist Accommodation

It’s not necessarily easy to find accessible accommodation, but there might be some options that make it easier. Social housing might be appropriate or you might be able to find funding for specialist accommodation. Perhaps we might start to see more provision of homes such as those that Australians can access with an NDIS provider. It can be a little more difficult to find specialised homes if you’re looking for somewhere appropriate for a family. It might be simpler when you need a home for an individual or perhaps a smaller family.

Look for a Home That’s (Almost) Ready

Private rented accommodation is an option, but it can be tricky to find what you’re looking for. The issue isn’t always that the properties aren’t out there, but they’re not always advertised well. Few property sites have the option of filtering by accessibility, although they do often allow you to look for bungalows, which can be useful. You can often find properties that are already adapted in some way, but you might need to look high and low to discover multiple options.

Know Your Legal Rights for Buying a Home

If your goal is to buy a home, it’s important to know what your rights are. If you’re disabled or ill, it shouldn’t stop you from getting a mortgage, even if all or part of your income comes from benefits. Your application for a mortgage can’t be rejected due to your disability and you can’t be asked to pay a larger deposit or monthly payments compared to non-disabled people. However, some lenders might be more willing to see you as able to afford mortgage payments than others.

Everyone deserves to have a home that’s right for them. It can be tough to find one that works for you, but it’s worth the search.
