Easy ways to practice sustainable living

Over the last few months I have take a real interest in sustainable living, having seen so much of it in the media and the world around us. For those who are unfamiliar with it, sustainable living is the practice of reducing your demand on natural resources by making sure that you replace what you use to the best of your ability. Sometimes that can mean not choosing to consume a product that is made using practices which don’t promote sustainability; and sometimes it means changing how you do things so that you start becoming more of an active part of the cycle of life. I asked a group of bloggers for the ways in which they practice a sustainable lifestyle.

We currently have a hybrid car and yet hope to switch to an electric car in the near future. We have looked into getting a NewMotion chargepoint saving us so much on fuel but also doing our part to sustain our world. ~ Kimberly.

I bought me and my husband refillable coffee cups and water bottles. A lot of the independent coffee stores near us give a discount if you bring your own coffee cup and it saves using disposables. ~ Alex.

Buy re-usable shopping bags. You can get some really pretty ones now and it saves on mountains of plastic going to landfill. ~ Alice.

Buy a compost bin! You get to easily dispose of your food waste and get amazing compost out of it for planting your own veggies. A water butt also means you can easily water your plants using collected rainwater, saving on your water bill as well. ~ Lynne.

Try out or even convert to using reusable cloth nappies as opposed to single use disposable ones. Not only is this option kinder on your little’s delicate skin but is also much kinder to our planet too. I was completely shocked to learn that it takes approximately 500 years for disposable nappies to actually break down whereas making the switch to reusable nappies could potentially make a 40% carbon saving. ~ Danielle.

Buy children’s clothes from preloved sites or charity shops. The clothing is already in the waste stream and they’re likely to be in good condition especially baby clothes as they grow so fast they don’t wear out! ~ Hollie.

If you’re a fan of fizzy water then get a soda stream instead of buying it in plastic bottles. You can make your own flavours too. ~ Erica.

We’ve started getting a veg box so that we’re eating seasonal organic produce and reducing the amount of plastic packaging that supermarket produce comes in. ~ Emma.

As you can see, there are so many small changes we can make to practice a sustainable lifestyle and I know that in the New Year we will be making a real effort to focus on these changes and many more.

  1. I reuse beer bottles for homebrew! We’ve been collecting toilet rolls for months to make our own Christmas crackers! I’ve even kept all spirit bottles to upcycle into ceiling lights. I love this stuff!
