7 Life-Saving Tips for Travelling with Kids

Every parent will agree that traveling with kids is an exercise in endurance. All those Are we there yet’s, endless tantrums, lost slippers, sore throats, and whatnot. Still, this is such a rewarding experience – to discover the wonders of the world along with your little ones. And for those of you who can’t imagine doing anything without your rugrats, we have prepared a handful of tips on how to make traveling with kids not only tolerable but even enjoyable. Let’s dive in!

1. Pick the Proper Destination

It’s hardly an eye-opener, but having kids affects all the decisions you make. And choosing the journey destination is no exception. So when picking the right destination for your trips, try to find a place that would suit all of you. Don’t sacrifice your own fun when choosing a safe but insanely boring resort. On the other hand, don’t throw caution out the window and go to some exotic country on the brink of a civil war. Speak to your children prior to deciding the destination – what are their ideas? What is their perfect vacation like? Pick and choose together – this way you’ll ensure that every party is satisfied.

2. Pack Wisely and Lightly

Do not even attempt to cram your whole wardrobe into your suitcase – you aren’t going to need all this stuff. The perfect way to decide what to take is to lay all that you are planning to take with you on the bed, then pack only half of it. Worry about a fresh change of clothing? Just use laundromats for all your clothes. Still, there are certain things that are a must in your luggage: your kids’ favorite toys, your or your kids’ medicine, an antibacterial gel, and wipes. And snacks, of course. Lots of them.

3. Get ID Complications Out of the Way

Getting a visa or passport photo for your kids can be quite a challenge in its own right. Kids aren’t exactly known for sitting still and staying put, so you might end up making countless attempts before you get a half-decent picture. So if you wish to save time, money, and peace of your mind, try making ID photos yourself. Luckily, there are tons of passport photo apps for iphone available now. All you have to do is to take a picture of your child, then process it with one of the apps, and there – you’ll have a perfectly compliable picture in no time.

4. Brand Your Kids

This is probably a parent’s worst nightmare – to lose their child in a crowded place. Especially in a completely new place. But if that – for any reason – happens, make sure that your kids have your contact information with them at all times. Write your phone number and name of their clothes, make them wear a bracelet with the info. Better yet – get a GPS tracking device to always be aware of their whereabouts.

5. Plan Ahead

Here you’ll get two tips for the price of one. First – be sure to have your activities planned. Because sometimes only sticking to a pre-approved plan can keep your vacation from getting out of hand. Still, leave some room – i.e. some vacation days free for improvisation. Second – leave plenty of time for the sake of Murphy’s law. That means that make sure to arrive at the airport or any other important place with some time to spare. Because if anything goes wrong (your taxi breaks down, or you forget your toy monkey at the hotel), you’ll have some extra time to fix it.

6. Be Aware of Health Concerns

Before you go somewhere, make sure to research the place in terms of potential health risks. Then, pack the medicine and/or get shots based on the information. Besides, get travel insurance – although you might never need it, it is still a worthy purchase.

7. Keep Calm and Enjoy

This might be the hardest thing of all to do, considering the overall stress of traveling with your kids, so consider this one not a tip, but a direct order. If you follow all our tips above, you’ll be good to go and won’t have to worry about a thing. So give yourself a little break and enjoy your vacation to the fullest. And if anything goes wrong – well, it’s time to learn to be flexible and adaptable.

So don’t rob yourself and your kids of a wonderful opportunity to travel the world. If you plan well, minimize risks, and do not beat yourself over things you can’t control, you are sure to have a journey of a lifetime. The one that you and your kids will fondly remember for years to come.
