3 steps to planning a family road trip

Whether it’s with your partner or friends, planning a road trip can seem pretty daunting; especially if you’ve never done it before. There are so many road trips across the world and all offer their own experience, which for a lot of us, we’d like to enjoy as a family. Preparing for a road trip with children on board can make the process that little bit more stressful. You’ll plan your route based on the places you want to see and things you want to do, so this will keep the littles ones entertained; but you’ll also spend a large amount of time on the road, travelling from A to B. With this in mind, it’s important to plan and prepare for your trip, so that everyone involved can have the best possible time.

If you’re planning a road trip or like the idea of one, hopefully this post will give you some of the tips you may need, in order to make the trip run as smooth as possible.

Before you leave…

Going on a road trip normally means one thing; a lot of time spent on the road. It’s important that your car is prepared for the amount of miles you’re going to be driving. The last thing you want is to set off on your journey or be half way through your trip and find yourself waiting for a recovery truck. To minimise the chances of this happening, it’s important to have your car put through a service and MOT. In order to make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey ahead, it’s best to book it in at somewhere like Kwik Fit, as any potential issues will be picked up before you set off.

Planning the journey

Planning the trip doesn’t just involve the route you’ll be taking. Hotels, distance between destinations and what you want to see, are all just as important. To make the trip more enjoyable for both you and the children it’s best to make sure everything you want to see and do is planned out and in accordance with your time scales. While in the planning stages it’s a good idea to get the little ones involved so you can find out exactly what they want to do while you’re away. Planning in advance will save a lot of hassle in the long run and any potential barriers along the way.

Are we there yet?

Is the dreaded question we expect to hear; so it’s best to try and avoid it at all costs. There will be plenty to do during the trip, which the children will love, but it’s also likely there will be lengthy periods in the car. To avoid boredom and questions, make sure you take activities to keep the little ones entertained while you’re on the road. Making activity packs is a good idea. Colouring books, puzzles and magazines are always favoured, as well as portable DVD players if you have access to them. In order for the journey to be as stress-free as possible for everyone, keeping the children entertained is a must. Buying refreshments along the way can also be expensive, so take plenty of food and drink with you.

Hopefully this quick guide has given you some useful tips if you’re planning a family road trip. Wherever you’re thinking of going; there are family friendly road trips all over the continent, which are sure to create lasting memories for the whole family.
