The children have absolutely loved their previous editions of The Junior Travelling Reader Subscription Box and so this month they were excited to receive the next addition. Aimed at children aged 9-12 years, delivered to your door each month, each box comes with a book, or books, set somewhere in the British Isles and the entire box is themed around this book, even down to the place it is set.
This months box was all about Wales which was very exciting for the children as we have plans to visit Wales as a family over the Summer. Inside they discovered The Valley of Lost Secrets by Lesley Parr, a letter from Lesley herself, some Welsh chocolate, a book mark, a pin badge, a drink sachet and some leaflets for things to do in the local area.
The Valley of Lost Secrets follows Jimmy in wartime, evacuated with his brother to a Welsh mining village, as he slowly acclimatises to his new surroundings. When Jimmy uncovers a hidden skull, he unearths a secret that has haunted the community for years. Described as echoing classics such as Carrie’s War and Goodnight Mister Tom, the story is quietly brutal, brilliantly heartfelt and beautifully written. In fact as soon as the children have finished reading it, I’ll be reading it myself.
The letter from the author, Lesley Parr, is such a great addition to the box and really draws in the reader with an insight into the story and the reasons behind it. Eva and Megan keep each letter from the author tucked away with their treasures, still completely in awe she has taken the time to write to them.
As much as the children enjoy the books each month, the thing they find the most exciting is the surprise additions to the box to really give them a taste of each city or country included. They were delighted to discover chocolate again this month, and had a very heated debate over who got to keep the pin badge and who got the bookmark, but all were received with such excitement.
For those who travel a lot as a family like us, the included leaflets are great for planning trips, days out and walking routes. The children love looking at the maps or local attractions and planning our itinerary for booked trips or just those on our wish list.
