Treads: The Indestructible School Shoe

I’ve always been lucky to get a good twelve months out of the kids school shoes each year with leaves just one of them to cost me the earth – Harry. I don’t know what it is he does to them, or how he manages to do it, but within a week of starting school his shoes were scuffed and scraped and now, seven months and two pairs in, I was beginning to wonder if we would ever manage to find a pair of shoes which are Harry-proof. Until now….

When we were asked to review Treads school shoes, with a 12 month indestructible guarantee, I was hopeful that this would be the answer to our shoe dilemma. Not only do Treads have a great range of school shoes for both boys and girls but they are different from other shoes on the market, made using a “strobel” technique where the upper is placed into a mould and the sole is then injected around it creating one unit without the need for gluing. Not only does this create a really strong bond, but it offers additional flexibility for active kids.

We allowed Harry to choose a new pair of schools from the site which was easy to navigate with a fantastic range of styles and sizes. Harry chose the “Madrid” style school shoe made from black leather and a touch fasten design. With free delivery our shoes were delivered in no time and Harry couldn’t wait to try them out!

Designed and built for active boys, even boys like Harry, I was hopeful that the additional protection on the toe would offer extra durability when he is kicking a ball around the playground, whilst the soft padded ankle would give him support all day long.

With Harry being just four the tough fasten rip tape design is perfect, allowing him to wear his shoes as tight, or as loose, as necessary to get the perfect fit whilst being easy to put on in the morning when we are battling against the clock!

On first appearance I was really impressed with Treads and the quality of the Permair leather – soft enough to allow flexible movement and yet strong enough to survive even the most active of playground activities.

The shoes have a really solid feel about them, without being too cumbersome, with a really strong sole and, as the name would suggest, a pretty impressive tread!

Teamed with durable ‘dual fit’ technology and subtle stitching for the perfect finish, I love that Treads combine both practicalities with style to create a shoe which not only looks good, but will stand the test of time.

I also love how each pair comes with full details about Treads and the key elements, including the removable EVA foot bed for that made to measure fit. I have never seen this in a pair of school shoes before and was really impressed!

Even better, Treads are so confident in the material and workmanship of their shoes that, should there be any issue, they will offer a 12 month indestructible guarantee on every pair. I think that speaks volumes about their brand and beats other standard guarantees I have seen hands down!

But admiring the shoes is one thing and putting them to the test is another. And of course Harry couldn’t wait to get put on and discover whether he had finally met his match in Treads!

From the moment Harry put on his Treads, by himself which is always a bonus, I could see what a great fit they were and particularly around the ankle area where he requires that extra support. With one foot slightly narrower than the other I loved that we could adjust the straps to ensure the perfect fit for both feet.

Harry has been wearing his Treads for the last couple of weeks at school and although they come home a little dirtier than when he left, after a quick wipe clean, they are still as good as new. There are no scuffs, no scrapes, and no signs of wear and tear!

I am really impressed with Treads and will definitely be buying the girls shoes from them in September too. Priced at £45 for Harry’s pair, I think this is a reasonable amount for shoes which are guaranteed to last you the entire school year (unless of course your child grows out of them!). I think our days of buying several pairs of shoes each year are well and truly over and, thinking about my bank balance, Harry isn’t the only one jumping for joy!

You can discover more styles over at the Treads website here.

For the same price as i have paid for a pair of Clarks shoes, these seem double the value. I’ll definitely be looking into these when the time comes for replacement shoes. Great review.

Those are nice shoes! Glad you finally found a pair that will last for your little guy. I think most companies don’t really take into consideration the damage children can do to shoes.
