As many of you know, although there are indeed five little doves, as a family there is also a sixth little dove who is a huge part of the family – our dog, Oscar. At seven years old Oscar is the most adorable little dog (although wow, he can bark!!) and now, with the children all in school, he is the best company throughout the day, curled up at my feet.
Over the Summer we were approached by Carla Gebhard who offered to paint a customised portrait of Oscar for us, and of course we said yes! Carla works at Carla Gebhard Designs where, after losing her family Boxer dog Melissa, she found that painting pictures of really helped her to cope with the loss. When her paintings began to get the recognition they absolutely deserved, she started to take orders for pet portraits via facebook.
In 2016, following brain surgery, Carla decided to turn her hobby into a business, working around her health conditions and putting a positive spin on it, something which I can absolutely relate to. At the beginning of 2018 she became an Official Prince’s Trust Supported Business and Carla Gebhard Designs, now specialising in Custom Paintings, Prints and Personalised Greetings Cards, has gone from strength to strength.
Working with Carla could not have been any easier and I think this is where her love of, not only painting but, animals really shows. When her portrait of Oscar arrived I couldn’t get over just how well she had captured both Oscars appearance and mischievous nature.
The detail in the painting appears so simple and yet creates the most true to life portrait of Oscar. As soon as the children saw it they were over the moon, asking “Please can that go in our bedroom?”.
With custom pet portraits starting at £25, I think this is such a gorgeous idea to celebrate pets we have loved, and also lost. I know that in many years from now, hopefully in the very distant future, this portrait of Oscar will be a real comfort to us.
