Finding time for pre-date night pampering

Before children, many moons ago, a date night was a big deal. I would spend the whole day getting ready, a long soak in the bath, scrubbing, shaving, exfoliating, relaxing with an aromatic candle. I’d have my hair done, my nails done, my eyebrows and make up, and then slip into something lovely that I had trailed the shops for the previous week.

Date night post children is a very different matter. For one, date nights are few and far between and, for two, getting ready with the children around is far from relaxing! I have mastered the art of showering, shaving (or not if I’m wearing trousers!), slap on a bit of mascara, shove my hair up in a messy bun and jump into whatever’s clean, or whatever fits, all whilst shouting, “Put it down!”, “Don’t touch that!” and “Look what you’ve done now!” at the children.

In that way, I feel as though I have lost touch with all things beauty related and, at 37, I fear the moment has passed for me to ever master the art of winged eyeliner! So I was really interested to discover a new E-book from Ellisons, “Experts in Beauty”, sharing the hottest beauty trends for 2017. It got me thinking that I really should find more time for me, and even more so for date night. I just need to start making more of an effort.

I asked a group of parent bloggers for their beauty tips for date night.

Definitely shave! You can’t be going out all gorilla like, so a nice long bath, a shave, then do hair, make-up all whilst having a pre-dinner drink! If its a very special occasion then I get my nails done to and have acrylic extensions. ~ Mummy of 5 miracles

Doing my nails or having them done. With looking after a child and the house they often look so sad so I love having sparkly nails for a night out! ~ Scandi Mummy

Hot bath and a mini pedicure – get rid of any hard skin, moisturise your feet, file your nails and put on some new nail polish! ~ This is me now

Take the hassle out of doing your hair and book a late afternoon hair appointment! Sit back and let someone else pamper you for a change! ~ Miracle Max

HD brows! They make such a difference to your face and make me feel so much more groomed and together. ~ Edinburgh Life

I’m a huge fan of the new liquid peels that are available from Bodyshop – they aren’t as scary as they sound! I pop a hair mask on and while it’s working its magic I apply a liquid peel which removes all the dead skin cells and preps my skin ready for applying make-up. ~ The UnNatural Mother

I’m going to take these tips on board, along with the advice from “Experts in Beauty”, and make sure that when Gaz and I celebrate our wedding anniversary later this month, I am looking preened and polished with the most perfect eyeliner!

This rings so true to me too. The luxury of having a night our is such a rarity, and then trying to feel human is just such a misson. I do love it when it happens though. I’ve got to the point where everything feels like it needs attention. My hair needs doing, my feet are crying for a pedicure, my epilator is wondering if I will ever charge it again, and all my lovely clothes in the wardrobe are no doubt considering moving out. I just need to find the time (hah). But, that said, my husband has his 40th birthday next month, which is a good excuse to catch up and actually do something instead of all this procrastinating.

Yes! The older I get the more work I have to put into looking good too! I miss the days when I could be pampered all day long, although I wouldnt change it…but I do miss my pretty nails!

Oh my goodness having a night out is rare enough but actually having some time to pamper yourself a bit beforehand is even rarer. I have a date night out tonight and know it will consist of my quickly changing my top and putting on some lippy in all of three seconds before we head out! xxx

Date nights are also few and far between in our house too and when they do happen I’m usually too tired to put much effort into my appearance, as bad as that may sound. I do love to have my nails painted though…makes me feel like a put together woman who has life sorted! (Not entirely the case, but a tired mummy can dream…)

I’m lucky to get 20 minutes to get ready, what I try and do is get the babysitter to come early enough to settle in and let me slap on a bit of make-up, and that’s about it. I love the idea of getting out and getting your hair done first though, I just need to be organised enough to coordinate it!

Pampering and prettying yourself up is so necessary sometimes. This post made me want to make more of an effort to do so more regularly.

One of my favorite things to do is go to the salon for a blow-out. However they work their magic .. my hair ends up super beautiful and the look lasts at least a couple of days!

Date nights are important for couples, especially when you have kids. You must still do it despite the busy schedule. I love the idea of preparing and pampering yourself before it.

I have to admit to making too much effort on date night. If I am lucky I will have had my eyebrows shaped and run straighteners through my hair and that is about it

For me one of favourite things about having a date night is to start getting ready, I love painting my nails, thinking about what to wear, putting make-up on. But it can really be time consuming.

Getting ready for a night out used to be my favourite part of the night. Once I had my daughter though that definitely changed! Going to the beauticians / hairdressers is a great idea and would make it much less stressful.

I think as parents we expect not to get date nights although it would be nice to get one in once in a while. Great tips. I find if I’m going out I have to get ready super fast so there isn’t time for nail painting etc.

I often have to skip painting my nails to these days! My nails are destroyed! xx
