** This is an advertorial post with Sunbites. All words and opinions are my own. **
As a family we love nothing more than to travel, get outdoors, and spend quality time together, especially in the Summer holidays. Obviously with four children it can be hard work to organise our plans, navigate long journeys, and make sure that our travels run as smoothly as possible, and that’s where my four top tips come into play!
When it comes to my kids I’ve learned that, just like when they were babies, they only really whinge when they are tired, need the toilet, are bored, or hungry. And with lots of early nights, toilet stops and fun ways to entertain them (even if this does sometimes involve three hours of I Spy…), that just leaves a ready supply of snacks and we’ve got all bases covered.
Try to maintain a bedtime routine
Trying to maintain a bedtime routine can be hard when you travel and I know there can be times when it’s out right impossible. Early morning flights or late night transfers can throw a routine right out of the window and, I know for my children, it can take a few days for them to catch up again. That said, we do try to make sure that the basics of bedtime remain the same so, regardless of what time they get to bed, the routine remains the same.
We also try to encourage the children to let us get enough rest too so, although they still wake up at an ungodly hour, they are very good at lying in bed and watching a film on their tablets or playing a few games until Gaz and I are feeling a little more human!
Plan in your stops
One of the first things I do when we plan our travels is to work out where we can stop for the children to use the toilet, stretch their legs and get some fresh air. There is nothing worse than being caught short on the motorway with no idea where the next service station is so having regular breaks works really well for us and means we have already allowed for that stop over time in our travel plans.
Keep the kids entertained
I am all for allowing my children to be bored but when it comes to our Summer plans and travelling, I also know that boredom leads to arguments and melt downs! I’m not ashamed to admit that on long car journeys I am happy to hand my kids their tablets and let them watch a film, play some games, and entertain themselves for as long as possible. Sometimes you just have to do whatever it takes and there is nothing at all wrong with that!
At the same time, during the day we limit screen time as much as possible and instead make sure to load up the car with everything we need to entertain the kids. It turns out that a bucket and spade and a blow up football can keep the kid entertained for hours and, failing that, nature offers up the most amazing ways to entertain the kids with sticks, shells and daisy chains!
Don’t forget the snacks!
Since having the kids I have realised that snacks are a vital part of surviving a day as a parent – for them and for me!! When we travel I always try and choose individually wrapped or packaged snacks that we can throw in a bag and take with us on a flight, a car journey or a day out.
We’ve been loving Sunbites over the Summer and with a delicious combination of 3 sun grown whole grains to give a really moorish crunchy texture, they’ve been a real hit! I love that they are high in fibre which is a real bonus given I’ll hold my hands up and admit that our diet is lacking over the Summer!
Available in multi-packs of six it means we can pick up a pack, pop it in our beach bag or rucksack, and they don’t take up a lot of space or weight very much at all, so it leaves room for everything else we need to survive our day!
In Sun Ripened Sweet Chilli, Sour Cream & Cracked Black Pepper, and Lightly Salted flavour, there is something for everyone and they make for a really tasty and handy snack for on the go, regardless of where we travel.
As a family who loves to travel whilst still trying to reduce our energy usage I love that, as an added bonus, Sunbites have been using 100% renewable energy to make grain waves and veggie harvest since 2017. It’s always great when the brands we love share a similar ethos to ourselves.
So with all four bases covered it means that, most of the time, our Summer travel plans run as smoothly as possible which in turn gives us more quality time to spend our days together as a family without tired meltdowns or hungry outbursts. And, although our days are far from perfect, we survive each of them with lots of love, laughter, and happy memories, and that’s good enough for me.
