When I think back to the Summers of my childhood, a thousand different memories come flooding back. I can distinctly remember the heat of the sun on my face as I built sandcastles on golden beaches, the smell of sausages sizzling on the BBQ, the sound of Seagulls over head as I paddled in ice cold seas, and the feeling of happiness as I sat eating an ice cream, safely cocooned between my parents, relishing in every last mouthful and every last moment of Summer.
And it’s funny because the older I get the less I remember those memories of extravagant Christmas presents, or lavish birthday parties. The less I remember the exact locations of those holidays which must have cost my parents an absolute fortune, the fancy hotels and the sea view apartments, and the more I remember the moments, and the feelings, of those Summer days when I didn’t have a care in the world, back when being a “grown up” felt like forever away, and the biggest decision I had to make that day was which ice cream flavour to choose or which swimming costume to wear. And sitting here now, thinking about those memories, all warm and fuzzy and thankful for a childhood which gave me so many wonderful moments, I know that as a parent, I will do just about anything to give my children the same.
When we were chosen as ambassadors for Kinder Ice Cream, new to the UK this year, it was even more appealing for me to know that Kinder Ice Cream share all of those values, and promote all of those memories, with their products having a real feeling of nostalgia and bringing that care free feeling of days gone by to life. And it’s safe to say we were over the moon to be a part of it.
To celebrate the launch of their new ice cream range, Kinder Ice Cream created two Memory Boxes, one on London’s South Bank, and the other at Paradise Place, Liverpool, for members of the public to visit and experience a sensory journey to transport them away from the rat race of every day life to a place of childhood memories through touch, smell and sight. We were so excited to be invited along to the Liverpool location where, not only did we get to visit the Memory Box but, we got to try the ice cream too!
And so last Friday, on the most miserable, cold, wet, and windy day, Gaz and I headed down to Liverpool to see the Memory Box and if ever there was a time we needed a taste of Summer, it was right there and then. The Memory Boxes consisted of three areas – sight, touch, and smell.
On one side of the box you could touch it to experience ice cold temperatures which instantly transported me back to those Summer days and that first lick of ice cream, that first toe dipped into the sea, the blast of ice cold water from an over zealous water fight, the feeling of surprise at dive bombing into the swimming pool.
On the other side you could lift the door to smell the most delicious scent of chocolate, taking me back to the sweet taste of ice cream on the promenade, the smell of chocolate as my Mum opened a box of ice creams from the freezer, the feeling of sticky hands from melted cornets, my Mum dabbing away at my T-shirt every two minutes as chocolate dribbled down my chin.
And on the third side, if you looked through two openings in the box, you could see a montage of images depicting all of those lovely moments of Summer and, of course, a whole world of ice cream to explore! I was even able to spot my girls eating ice cream in Jersey last year and, despite the fact my hands were so cold I could barely feel them, or that raindrops trickled down my nose, I was able to remember that exact moment we had shared together, the memory of that ice cream, of the sun on our faces, of how happy we had been in the midst of Summer, when all of our worries felt a whole world away.
Of course, once we had explored the Memory Box and counted down until 12pm, it was only right that we got to try the ice cream too! Kinder Ice Cream have launched three new products aimed at families – Kinder Ice Cream Sandwich, Kinder Ice Cream Stick and the Kinder Joy Ice Cream.
I was keen to try the Kinder Ice Cream Stick which at just 62Kcal per serving is perfectly sized for little hands and consists of a milk ice cream stick, half covered with the same milk chocolate used by Kinder.
Obviously I am taking my ambassador role very seriously and for that reason, it was important that I tried the ice cream twice (ahem), and I have to say it was just as delicious as I had hoped it would be!
Alongside the Kinder Ice Cream Stick is the Kinder Ice Cream Sandwich consisting of two 5-cereals biscuits with milk ice cream and just 92 Kcal per serving. The winning combination of the smooth ice cream and the satisfying crunch of the biscuit makes for a delicious treat and I know my children are going to really enjoy these.
And lastly, the one I know the kids will go crazy for – the Kinder Joy Ice Cream. In true Kinder style this is a unique egg-shaped treat which contains two delicious milky and cocoa ice creams as well as a surprise toy. I absolutely love the sound of this one and, although we didn’t try this at the launch, I just know it will be a firm favourite this Summer.
I have to say I am so impressed with the new Kinder Ice Cream range and I love how the products appeal to children whilst taking into account nutritional values and low calorie options. It was such an honour to be a part of the launch, to explore the Memory Box and revisit our childhood Summers, and I am so excited for the months ahead where we will be sharing more of this with you all and the official verdict from my children!
Although the Kinder Ice Cream launch has now ended, you can still get in on the action by purchasing Kinder Ice Cream in your supermarket, available now. During a rather wet and miserable March, they are a much needed reminder that sunny days are just around the corner and if Kinder Ice Cream tastes this good in the cold and rain, imagine how good they’ll taste in the sunshine?
