A bathroom makeover

Since we moved into our house three years ago, slowly but surely we have been working hard to make our house a home. Over the last three years we have decorated every bedroom but our own, replaced the conservatory with a solid roof, converted the garage into a playroom and painted and decorated throughout. And all that is left, and the job we have been putting off the longest, is the bathrooms – a huge task that I am not looking forward to in the slightest!!

We have big plans to re-design the layout of our downstairs bathroom and to replace the suite upstairs, and yet nothing is quite as simple as it sounds! We have spent the last few weeks trawling bathroom showrooms and DIY stores, dithering over colour schemes, bath taps and door handle packs and although we have made progress, we are yet to fully commit to the style of our future bathroom!

Traditional?

In the right house, I love a traditional bathroom. I love the deep bathtubs with the intricate claw feet, the shallow basins and the fact that there is the possibility of injecting so much character into a traditional design. That said, for our house, and in keeping with the rest of our home, a traditional bathroom wouldn’t really fit, not without decorating every other room to match!!

Ultra modern?

I love these ultra modern bathroom designs, and just looking at it makes me so happy. No tiles to clean or grout to scrub, no mountain of bath toys piled up in a corner, no ten thousand bottles of every single toiletry known to man, cluttering up the window sill or the ledge above the sink. And yet with four children I think a bathroom like this would be impossible, and whilst it would be amazing to have a floor so shiny and a bath so sparkling clean, I think in terms of practicalities, this one will have to wait until the children leave home!

Fairytale?

If I truly believed that my children would allow this bathroom to remain just as beautiful as the day it was fitted, I would have this installed in an instance. I love the boudoir feel, the romantic lighting and feminine touches, and yet I know that as lovely as it is, in theory this would never work in my house either.

Family friendly?

I love a nautical theme and as a family with plenty of “stuff”, this style of bathroom is definitely one that would fit well in our home. When it comes to children, storage is key, preferably high shelves, lockable cabinets, and plenty of towels, bath mats and an industrial strength shower curtain to keep at least some of the water in the bath.

In the next couple of weeks we will hopefully have made a decision, and our bathroom transformations will be underway and I can’t wait to share our progress!

Which style of bathroom would you choose?

A bathroom is one of my favourite rooms in the house. I’ve spent countless hours soaking in our bath and it’s the one place I go to truly relax. I love all these bathrooms but I would narrow it down to either the traditional or fairytale as being my fave x

Oh I wish I could relax in our bathroom. I have an audience every time I pee, at least one little face watching me shower and even when I’m in the bath one of them comes in to use the toilet, and completely ruins the moment! Whatever style of bathroom we choose, I’m getting a lock for the door!!! xx

In my head I’d love that fairytale bathroom, but in reality I’d end up with the ultra modern style. I just love easy to clean surfaces, and if that means my bathroom and house must look like an Apple Store, so be it!

That’s the main thing I want – easy to clean!! I don’t want tiles, I am so sick of cleaning the grout!!!

Our bathroom is only a year old and while I love our beautiful tiles but I hate the clutter…need to come back to it at some point. Interesting to compare different styles!

It’s inevitable with children that there will be clutter, I want lots of built in storage!! xx

I agree, it would be lovely in a swanky hotel though!

If I had to choose from the four styles you mentioned I’d definitely go for a fairytale bathroom!

It looks so lovely and relaxing doesn’t it? I just know that it isn’t the most child friendly! xx

We went for fairly classic for ours as we didn’t want something that would date too much. We stuck to plain white fittings eith simple but nice taps with big white tiles in the bathroom and then painted the walls a soft blue and have a nautical thene. I wouldn’t recommebmnd victoria plumb though!! Thanks for joining us for #marvmondays

I had someone recommend Victoria Plumb but then everyone else has said stay well clear?! I think we will go for something very classic. xx

I love the idea of the traditional one, that deep bath would be lush. But the fairytale one looks just gorgeous. I will probably still be sharing sunbath with about a dozen Barbie dolls!! #MarvMondays

Haha me too! It doesn’t look quite as pretty with rubber ducks and foam letters stuck all over the tiles! xx

I like traditional and modern lol. Wonder if you can combine the two x

I want to combine all four, ahah! xx

#marvmonday i think you should go for the modern nautical one – with a little less clutter, but not so modern it would scare the kids

Yes, I think we will end up with something along those lines! xx

I love the fairytale and modern look. At the moment our bathroom is possibly just like a family bathroom #MarvMondays

Yes, I think when the kids are young there’s not much choice! xx
