Little cooks co – carrot cake bars

One of my favourite things to do with the children, is cooking. The girls go crazy at the thought of making cupcakes, cookies or my speciality Rocky Road, and yet the problem is that none of these are very healthy!

When I heard about Little Cooks co I loved that not only are these boxes delivered to your door, saving on the drama of the supermarket, but all of the recipes, both sweet and savoury, are made with healthy ingredients!

With the option of a one off purchase, a three month or six month subscription, each box contains all of the dry ingredients you will need to create a delicious, healthy recipe with easy to follow instructions.

With a different recipe each month, our first box was the Carrot Cake Bars, requiring two carrots, honey and almond butter. Eva was so excited to open the box to reveal all of the pre-weighed ingredients and couldn’t wait to get started!

Dependent on the child’s age, the Little Cooks co boxes are suitable for your child to do almost entirely by themselves, obviously within reason and always with supervision.

They aim to encourage children to gain their independence in the kitchen whilst educating them on the benefits of healthy eating and cooking together as a family. And it was so lovely watching Eva get stuck in!

Due to the fact that all of the dried ingredients are provided in the correct measures, Eva was easily able to combine the ingredients once I had blended the oats and nuts together in the food processor.

The carrot cake bars took around ten minutes to prepare but we found the recipe to be very straight forward and the instructions clear and precise.

Eva and I spoke a lot about the ingredients, some she hadn’t heard of before, and had a really interesting conversation about the textures, the smells and the tastes.

After 15 minutes in the oven the carrot cake bars were ready and, once cooled, we were able to cut them into child sized chunks ready for tomorrows lunch boxes.

If I’m honest I was a little worried about Eva’s verdict, having seen the amount of “goodness” that had gone into the cakes. With a very sweet tooth Eva usually pulls up her nose at most fruit and veg, and I was concerned that the cake bars would not be sweet enough.

It turns out that I needn’t have worried as both Eva and I thought that the cakes were delicious! Despite containing no added sugar or artificial ingredients, they were  lovely and sweet from the raisins, as well as being a great texture, consistency and flavour.

I am so impressed with the Little Cooks co boxes and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to other families. The children are already looking forward to trialling another recipe and I am more than happy to see them tucking into delicious, healthy snacks….that I haven’t had to slave away over!!

This does look like a fun recipe box and a healthier cake bar than the ones we would usually make. They look great and it sure looks like fun to bake them too!

It’s lovely to let them do it by themselves too, rather than us weighing out everything and faffing about. I love that it’s all prepared good to go! xx
