We have a saying in our house where every once in a while, on birthdays or Christmas or the occasional weekend, we have a “cheeky breakfast!”. A cheeky breakfast can be anything from Coco Pops to freshly cooked pancakes, but the common theme in a cheeky breakfast is sugar, way too much sugar!
My children all have a sweet tooth, they take after me in that respect, and yet when it comes to sugar, and particularly chocolate, their absolute favourite sugary treat, I try to limit it due to worries about their teeth, their health and the inevitable sugar rush that comes with it!
Last pancake day I caved and bought the children a jar of chocolate spread, foolishly assuming that they would have one delicious pancake, hide the jar away in the cupboard and all would be forgotten. How wrong I was! For the last few months I have listened, on repeat, to Eva pleading with me to let her have just one cheeky breakfast involving chocolate spread. But with the equivalent of fifty seven sugar cubes per 400g jar there is no breakfast cheeky enough for that in our house, and the chocolate spread has been cast out with the rubbish!
So you can imagine our delight, when we were introduced to JimJams, a range of spreads which taste amazing but have a fraction of the sugar. With the chocolate spread having 83% less sugar than leading brands, we were keen to give it a try!
The JimJams chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties, are gluten free (thank you JimJams!), diabetic friendly and have won Great Taste Awards. They have also been approved by The British Dental Health Foundation as being kinder to teeth.
I was worried that without all of that sugar the spread would lack sweetness and flavour and yet as soon as we opened the jar we were hit by the most amazing chocolatey smell. JimJams uses Maltitol to sweeten their spreads, a natural source with half the sugar and kinder on teeth.
The spread has a great consistency, spreading really well which meant that at five, Eva was easily able to do it herself. I love encouraging her to become more independent with her breakfast each morning, and she loved that without my watchful eye she was able to sneak an extra thick layer of chocolate spread on her croissant!
And the official verdict from Eva? If the speed of her shovelling it into her mouth with a huge grin on her face wasn’t enough, she said it was the best chocolate spread she has ever had! For the purpose of the review I stepped in to give it a try (well I do like to be thorough), and let me tell you it was chocolatey, sweet and utterly delicious!! And when it comes to a cheeky breakfast this spread will be at the top of our list!!
